Somerville Looks at Bringing Food Trucks to the City

Although they can be found in various sections of the Boston area, mobile food trucks currently seem to be concentrated in Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge, with Medford possibly getting on board soon. Now another community is looking at the possibility of bringing food trucks in, though nothing has been written in stone as of yet.

The Somerville Patch is reporting that the city is currently working on an ordinance to govern mobile food trucks, with a major issue being the actual location of the trucks. City officials hope to strike a balance where they protect residential neighborhoods from noise and traffic and brick-and-mortar restaurants from possible competition issues while still having a "vibrant" food-truck scene. Areas that will likely be debated include Davis Square and Union Square, and parking lots around the city will certainly be looked at as well.

A meeting about food trucks will be held tonight at 7:00 PM at City Hall, according to the Patch.

[October 26 update: After months of debate on the issue, it is now official--food trucks will indeed be coming to Somerville. The Somerville Patch reports that the Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance allowing food trucks to be set up in the city, with the trucks being allowed to operate between the hours of 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM (unless they receive special permission for extended hours). Thanks to Eater Boston for bringing this to our attention.]
