Wegmans Market to Open in Burlington

A supermarket that is opening its first Massachusetts location west of Boston is now planning to open another store north of the city.

According to The Boston Globe, Wegmans is looking to open in Burlington in the spring of 2013, joining another Wegmans market that is opening in Northborough. (Another Wegmans that had been planned for Westwood appears to still be on hold for now.) The article states that the grocery store, which looks to be just under 150,000 square feet in size, would apparently open on Third Avenue near the Burlington Mall, where several office buildings currently reside. Plans for the Burlington Wegmans include a food court that would be about 15,000 square feet.

[October 30 update: According to a more recent article in The Boston Globe, the new Wegmans in Burlington is going to be in Burlington's Northwest Park, with construction expected to begin in the spring of 2012. As indicated earlier, the new spot is expected to open in the spring of 2013, and it will have about 140,000 square feet of space, with 15,000 feet dedicated to a market cafe.]

[November 1, 2012 update: The Boston Globe reports that ground has been broken on the development where the Burlington Wegmans will be. In addition, it looks like site work on the actual Wegmans space will begin soon, though it now appears that the market won't be opening until 2014.]

[July 3, 2014 update: The Daily Times Chronicle states that the new Wegmans opening in Burlington plans to open on October 26.]

Wegmans traces its beginnings to a fruit and vegetable company in Rochester, NY, that opened during World War I. The supermarket chain now has about 75 locations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

The Wegmans website is at http://www.wegmans.com/
